3 Hornwort Plants for Water Environments

Hornwort, also known as Coontail, is a versatile aquatic plant with sturdy, layered hair-like foliage that serves multiple purposes. It not only oxygenates and clarifies water but also helps control algae growth. This plant can be found free-floating all around the world, thriving in both flowing and stagnant waters, or loosely anchored in muddy substrates.

As autumn approaches, the tips of Hornwort plants undergo a transformation, shortening and thickening before eventually detaching and settling on the pond floor to endure the winter as buds. Come spring, these buds sprout anew, contributing to the pond's rejuvenation.
